SUCCESSFULLY NAVIGATE CHANGE

Change eats process for breakfast. It’s as much (perhaps even more) about building the adaptability needed to thrive in a changing world as it is about mastering the mechanics of the improvement process.

Successfully Changing What You Do and How You Do Things is Not Easy

There are many reasons why organisations struggle to implement strategy or drive continuous improvement – even if they have a good process.

Probably the most difficult, and critical, aspect of implementing any new process is preparing the people who will be impacted by each change to successfully navigate that change.
❝In the next 10 years we will see more change
than the last 100❞. — Ray Kurzweil

Why We Need to Prepare Our People for Change

It’s not hard to see why strategy driven transformation, and for that matter, continuous improvement, can make people anxious. Strategic changes inevitably mean changing how we organise, changing what people do and even stopping doing something that may be the very reason why somebody is currently employed. Moreover, the world we live, and work, in is becoming ever more disruptive and disrupting – with ever faster cycles of innovation and change needed to stay relevant.

A line graph comparing the rate of change over time between human adaptability and technology. The technology curve rises steeply above the human adaptability curve, with a marker labeled “We Are Here” placed on the technology line. The image visually illustrates the growing gap between technological advancement and human adaptability, reinforcing the need to prepare people for ongoing change.

Whilst more incremental, employees may also naturally fear continuous improvement – equating improvement with job cuts and enforced changes to working practices. With the advent of generalised AI, much of we think of as human work today will almost certainly not be human work in the future. No matter how good our process is for improving, or for implementing strategic changes, the chances of success are dramatically lower if our people are trapped in a mindset that resists change out of fear of the consequences of it.

Increasing Change Readiness and Adaptability

Breakthrough Partners believes that the key to successfully navigating change isn’t about implementing some mechanistic “change management” process every time you transform, or improve, rather it’s fundamentally about increasing your organisation’s capacity to embrace, rather than resist, change.

We believe the key to doing this lies in developing individual (and through this organisational) Adaptability whilst simultaneously increasing Change Readiness by reducing the barriers that hold us all back from embracing change in a positive way.

Increasing Adaptability With AQ (Adaptability Quotient)

A powerful and scientifically validated way to both understand and improve adaptability is the concept of AQ, or Adaptability Quotient. AQ, like IQ, and EQ historically, is a holistic measure of individual, and workplace adaptability. The higher your AQ, the more likely you will be able to successfully navigate change and setbacks with a positive frame of mind.

Developed by AQai, the acknowledged leader in developing organisational adaptability, Breakthrough Partners certified AQ practitioners can help you assess the current level of individual and team adaptability within your organisation and identify the actions that will increase that adaptability.

A circular diagram divided into three segments—Ability, Character, and Environment—each containing three labeled subcategories. Ability includes Mental Flexibility, Unlearning, and Resilience; Character includes Grit, Mindset, and Mental Health; Environment includes Team Support, Work Environment, and Emotional Support Network. The image visually represents the components of Adaptability Quotient (AQ), supporting the concept of measuring and improving adaptability within individuals and organizations.

Leveraging the AQ assessment, which covers 15 sub-dimensions of adaptability, Breakthrough Partners can help you identify actions to help your employees develop their adaptability. Whether it's developing the individual ability to “unlearn” knowledge that prevents us from considering new approaches (that might conflict with what we already believe) or recognising the need to make specific changes to create a more supportive environment, AQ can help your organisation to build the adaptability it needs to thrive is an ever more disruptive and hyper-connected world.

Take the first step to leveraging the power of adaptability in your organisation.

As a practical first step towards building greater adaptability, we have created a AQ based training course – “From Change Management to Change-ability” which is designed to help change leaders leverage the Adaptability Quotient (AQ) model to both develop greater personal adaptability and to encourage greater adaptability in the individuals that will be impacted by the change they are introducing.

Where this course is run as an in-house training, there is also the option to include a comprehensive digital AQ Assessment – which can provide both an individual and team perspective on adaptability – to increase the value of the learning for participants.

Increasing Change Readiness With Neurofeedback (Brain Training)

Another complementary and highly effective approach offered by Breakthrough Partners to improve the readiness of your people to embrace change, is the use of neurofeedback training, sometimes known as Brain Training.

An illustrated diagram titled “Feedback Loop” featuring a central icon of a human head with a brain, surrounded by three labeled components: Individual Training, Continuous Audio-Visual Feedback, and Real-time Information. The image visually explains how neurofeedback (brain training) works to enhance change readiness by strengthening brain activity and responsiveness.

Validated by decades of scientific research, neurofeedback is a powerful, and critically, non-invasive process, that helps us “train” our brains to reset habits that affect individual performance and productivity. With origins in the 1960s, neurofeedback, is rapidly growing in popularity and is increasingly being used not just by clinicians to successfully treat conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, and depression, but also by certified practitioners to help individuals reach their full potential by enhancing concentration, improving mood regulation and increasing focus.

Neurofeedback Helps Us Reduce the Barriers to Change Readiness

In Breakthrough Partners, we see neurofeedback as a powerful tool to help individuals, and organisations, prepare for continual change by reducing the physiological and psychological barriers that prevent us from perceiving change as a positive force in our lives.

An iceberg diagram illustrating the impact of neurofeedback on change readiness. The visible tip of the iceberg lists benefits such as increased alertness, better decision-making, improved focus, and concentration. Below the surface, the submerged section highlights reduced barriers like stress, forgetfulness, anxiety, impulsiveness, and fatigue. The image visually conveys how neurofeedback addresses underlying challenges to support visible improvements in performance and adaptability.

Our certified neurofeedback practitioners can help create a customised neurofeedback programme for your organisation which can include the establishment of “brain gyms” (including all of the equipment needed to run neurofeedback sessions), supervision of brain training sessions, setting of regular development challenges and monitoring of the impact of the training in terms of reduced barriers and impact on measurable outcomes.
